In a shocking development amid the ongoing demolition exercise in Oworonshoki, Lagos, a residential building was reportedly demolished at midnight while occupants were still asleep inside. Eyewitnesses and residents described the incident as “terrifying” and “inhumane,” saying no prior notice was given before the structure was brought down.
According to locals, the demolition team arrived unannounced in the middle of the night, accompanied by security operatives. Within minutes, bulldozers began tearing down the building, causing panic among sleeping residents who were forced to flee in confusion.
One eyewitness told reporters that several families lost their belongings as they scrambled to safety. “They started bringing down the building around 12:30 a.m. People were still inside. Children were crying, and many couldn’t even take their clothes or documents,” the witness said.
The Lagos State Government had earlier launched a series of demolitions in Oworonshoki and other waterfront communities, citing illegal construction on drainage channels and right-of-way areas. However, residents insist that most of the affected buildings were legally acquired and approved, accusing authorities of poor communication and excessive force.
Human rights advocates have condemned the midnight operation, calling for an urgent investigation into the incident. They argue that demolishing occupied homes without proper notice or resettlement plans violates basic human rights and safety standards.
As of press time, no official statement has been released by the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning regarding the midnight demolition. Meanwhile, several displaced families in Oworonshoki are reportedly seeking temporary shelter with friends, relatives, or local churches.
The incident has sparked outrage across social media, with Nigerians calling on the government to halt demolitions carried out without due process and humane consideration.
