Imo State Government Rescues Widow Forced to Drink Water Used to Bathe Husband’s Corpse in Barbaric Widowhood Ritual

In a shocking case that has sparked widespread outrage, the Imo State Government has rescued a widow, Mrs. Chika Ndubuisi, who was allegedly forced by her husband’s kinsmen to drink water used in bathing his corpse to prove her innocence over his death. The incident occurred in Awo-Omamma, located in the Oru East Local Government Area of the state.

According to reports, Mrs. Ndubuisi was detained by her late husband’s relatives, who accused her of having a hand in his death. They allegedly attempted to make her undergo a cruel widowhood ritual by drinking the water used to cleanse the corpse before burial.

The situation came to light after a women’s advocacy group raised an alarm, prompting swift intervention from the Imo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare.

Government Condemnation and Swift Intervention

Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Lady Nkechinyere Ugwu, condemned the act in strong terms, calling it “barbaric, inhuman, and completely unacceptable in a civilized society.”

“It is unimaginable that in this modern age, a grieving widow would be subjected to such cruelty under the guise of proving innocence,” Ugwu said. “This outdated widowhood practice has no place in our society today.”

Ugwu revealed that Mrs. Ndubuisi was rescued after the Ministry, in collaboration with local council authorities, non-governmental organizations, and security agencies, moved swiftly to the scene. Their coordinated efforts prevented the forced ritual and ensured the widow’s safety.

“The timely alert by the women’s group saved her life,” Ugwu added. “Normalcy has been restored, and Mrs. Ndubuisi and her children are now under government protection.”

Governor’s Wife Orders Investigation

The First Lady of Imo State, Chioma Uzodinma, also expressed shock and anger over the incident, directing an immediate and comprehensive investigation to ensure that all those involved face justice.

She reiterated the state government’s zero tolerance for any harmful traditional practices, especially those targeting widows and vulnerable women.

Justice and Protection for Victims

The Commissioner confirmed that several arrests had been made in connection with the case and assured the public that the perpetrators would be prosecuted.

This incident has reignited calls for stronger laws and community sensitization to eradicate harmful widowhood practices that persist in some Nigerian communities.

Women’s rights groups have commended the swift response by the Imo State Government and called for continued vigilance to protect widows from abuse and cultural violence.

For now, Mrs. Ndubuisi and her children remain in protective custody, as investigations continue to bring those responsible to justice.
