Bangkok Metropolitan Police executed a daring undercover operation codenamed “Take Down Black-Shadow Nana,” leading to the arrest of nine suspects — eight foreigners and one Thai national — accused of drug trafficking in the city’s popular Nana-Asoke tourist district.
The coordinated raid, carried out before dawn on October 26, involved 40 anti-narcotics officers disguised as construction workers and nightlife patrons. The operation followed multiple complaints on the ThailandTourism community page about groups of African men allegedly selling drugs, defrauding tourists, and engaging in pickpocketing in the area.
Sophisticated Operation Exposed
Working with the Narcotics Suppression Bureau and Lumpini Police Station, officers conducted surveillance on the suspects for weeks. CCTV footage revealed that the men had developed a clever system to evade capture — they avoided interacting with Thai locals, who they suspected might be undercover officers, and hid small quantities of drugs inside their mouths.
When a potential buyer appeared, they would discreetly spit out the drugs to complete a sale. If they spotted police, they swallowed the substances instantly to destroy evidence.
The Dramatic Pre-Dawn Sting
Before sunrise, officers disguised as construction workers parked near a site on Sukhumvit Soi 11 in Khlong Toei Nuea, blending seamlessly with the environment. When two unsuspecting tourists walked by, several of the suspects approached to offer drugs. That’s when the undercover officers surrounded them and gave the order to strike.
In the chaos that followed, some suspects tried to flee while others swallowed their stash, but police quickly subdued all nine individuals. Officers recovered 3.8 grams of cocaine and 3,000 baht in cash during the operation.
Suspects and Evidence
Those arrested include eight Nigerian men — Onyekama Frankline (29), Onuoha Desmond (34), Nnawuke Lucky (29), Alahieobi Favour (35), Ubammadu Chibuzor (32), Amajioyi Chinaemeze (23), Udemgba Innocent (28), and Nwachukwu Chisom (41) — along with Thai national Phanuwat Thanawet (36) from Udon Thani Province.
Police Major General Theeradet Thumsuthee, Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, explained that such networks often smuggle drugs into Thailand by swallowing plastic-wrapped packets before boarding flights and later retrieving them for distribution in nightlife areas.
“Even during the raid, several suspects swallowed the drugs,” Maj. Gen. Theeradet said. “We provided milk and medical supervision to recover the evidence safely.”
Tourist Praise and Continued Crackdowns
Many foreign visitors in the Nana area expressed gratitude to the authorities, saying the operation made them feel safer. Police officials stated that the crackdown is part of an ongoing effort to restore Bangkok’s reputation as a secure and tourist-friendly destination.
Lt. Gen. Siam Boonsom, Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, has ordered continued surveillance and similar anti-drug operations across the city to combat transnational criminal activity.
With the success of “Black-Shadow Nana,” authorities say Bangkok is sending a clear message: organized crime and drug trafficking have no place in Thailand’s tourism scene.
